“The Workday” is a weekly podcast that explores the “workday” from the worker’s perspective. Each episode features a guest who interviews an actual day-in-the-life worker. This week’s guest is a day-in-the-life worker, Jessica. Jessica is originally from the Bay Area but now lives in Houston. Jessica has been a day-in-the-life worker for three years.

This is a typical day for Jessica. She wakes up at 8:30 the morning of the day she will start work and is gone for the rest of the day. She has a husband, two boys, and a daughter who is in high school. When she goes to bed at around 7:30 she sleeps for the rest of the night.
As is typical for women in the US, Jessica goes to work at 830. Jessica has been told that she will get a pay raise at the end of this year. She’s getting a raise that will make her work for less hours and give her more hours to go to school. Jessica has to figure out what she will do with her life at work. The only thing she knows for sure is that she cannot be a part of the world economy as a secretary.
A simple question like that can quickly get her into trouble, because it’s not just the world economy that interests her. She and her family are the only ones allowed to travel to Latin America at any given time.
As someone who has been traveling to Latin America for a few years, I can understand Jessica’s anxiety. It’s a scary and strange place. But a lot of the people I’ve met are not so afraid of the unknown as they are of the unknown. One of the best things about traveling the world is that I never see the faces of people I’ll never see again.
I’ve been to Latin America and it never fails to amaze me how much Latin America is changing. In the last couple of years there has been a new wave of entrepreneurialism, as well as a new immigration policy. Jessicas story is part of the ongoing economic and political change, but it also highlights the very difficult reality that those who immigrate to Latin America (or to the US) often don’t speak the language.
