Self-reflection and self-awareness are two different things, but the concept itself is similar. Jung called it a synonym for “self-knowledge,” which is what people who understand themselves tend to refer to as self-awareness. In the same way, self-awareness refers to the ability to take in ourselves and our own behaviors and put them to use in the world.
Basically, self-reflection is taking a look at your own actions and your own thoughts, and figuring out exactly how they have an impact on other people and the world at large. Self-awareness, on the other hand, is the ability to acknowledge when we’re having a bad day, or a bad day is having a bad day, and then taking deliberate steps to fix it.
Self-reflection is part of learning how to live a good life, and I can’t believe how often I see people come out of a conversation feeling like their self-awareness was so much better than the other person’s that they couldn’t even follow through.
