I’ve been very interested in the work of Dan Ariely, the psychologist who has published a ton of research into how people self-define. He talks about the “third level” in this context, which is what he calls the “self-aware” mind. It’s about how our beliefs, emotions, and thoughts affect how we behave. He calls it the “fog of indifference”.
Well I’ve been wondering about this myself as well, and I think it’s something that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.
The fog of indifference is when you’re not consciously aware of your thought processes and actions. The fog of indifference is what allows you to ignore the negative consequences of your actions and continue living a happy life. But as Ariely points out in his book Predictably Irrational (which I highly recommend), the fog of indifference isn’t the only reason people feel like they can’t make good decisions.
I think we actually have a psychological problem that is part of the reason why people feel they cant make good decisions. The fog of indifference makes us feel powerless to affect the world around us. When we are in that fog of indifference, people seem to believe that things arent getting better. As Ariely points out, however, the thing we all have in common is that we are not in the fog of indifference.
The thing we all have in common is that we are not in Ariely’s “fog of indifference.” One of the most common reasons people say they can’t make good decisions is that they have the feeling of powerlessness. This is true for everyone, man, but it’s especially true for those of us in the modern era. The reason this is so is because people in the modern era have lost the ability to act based on a sense of self-efficacy.
Powerlessness is a common symptom of the modern era but not because of any kind of disease or mental disorder. It’s simply because people have lost the ability to do what they were capable of doing pre-modern age. This is most common with people who suffered some kind of trauma to their brain, and were unable to fully recover. This is the case for people who have lost their sense of self-efficacy.
I’m not talking about physical trauma. I’m talking about mental trauma. This is what makes the modern era so dangerous. When we lose a sense of self-efficacy, the sense of power we have over our own lives is gone. This is what makes the modern era so dangerous. This is what makes people who are self-aware so dangerous.
This is what can cause a person to lose their sense of self-efficacy and become mentally ill. Imagine you lose your sense of self-efficacy. Imagine you are unable to do anything. Imagine you are not your own person. Imagine you are a prisoner of your own mind and body. Imagine you are suffering from some kind of mental illness. Then imagine you are unable to talk, move, and even eat. Imagine you are unable to have a normal life.
When you think about this, it kind of makes sense why people who are mentally ill are so dangerous. It is because they don’t feel like they have control over their own lives. They think that they don’t have control over their own body. They think that they don’t have control over their own mind. It’s because they are in a state of mind where they feel that they can’t be themselves. This is why people who are mentally ill are in so much trouble.
Of course, the mental ill are not the only people for whom the feeling of loss of control is a major problem. Many people who have a mental illness also feel the loss of control over their own lives. We call these feelings of loss of control “chaos”.
