Self-awareness is a type of cognitive awareness that is the ability to recognize a specific thought, feeling, or idea in the moment. It is an awareness that comes from the recognition of a thought, feeling, or idea without having to consciously think about it.

We can have the “self” awareness that says “I’m going to go for a walk”, but we also can have the “self” awareness that says “I’m not going to go for a walk”. This is a fundamental difference in our ability to recognize thought.

The problem is when we don’t have a self awareness of which thought, feeling, or idea is being referred to. We don’t necessarily realize that we’re referring to a thought. For example, I have the self awareness that I’m going for a walk. But when I don’t recognize that, I think “Im going for a walk,” and then it just comes out as “Im going for a walk.

It’s a very common problem. We think that our thoughts are clear and easy to understand. But we’re actually not. We always have to keep our brains in check to keep our thoughts on track. We’re not actually always aware of what we’re thinking.

I have a friend who always talks like she has a really good grasp of what she is saying.

The problem is a lot of times the thoughts are actually very unclear and ambiguous. This is true for a lot of communication situations. For example, if you are going to a meeting, you might be thinking about how you are going to prepare your presentation. But the problem is you could be thinking about your day at work and the meeting could be important, but you might not be focused enough to be able to clearly articulate what the meeting is all about.

To avoid this problem, we say that it is important to articulate the thoughts that we are having so that the audience can understand them. We also know that this means we need to be able to tell when we are talking about something other than the topic we are talking about.

A good way to be able to articulate your thoughts is to create a “mental diagram.” Think of your thoughts as the lines in a diagram. Imagine the lines as being like the fingers in a keyboard. The lines on your mental diagram represent your thoughts. You should be able to trace these thoughts on your mental diagram and see how they are connected.

A good way to practice is to write them down in the middle of your day. Make a list of thoughts/ideas you’d like to practice. Then write them in the middle of your day. You might write them on the bathroom mirror, on a piece of paper, or in your journal. Make a mental diagram of your day and try to trace your thoughts on it.

Speaking of reflection, if you are having trouble seeing how your thoughts are connected, try to trace them back to their source. Do this by writing them down in the middle of your day. If you can trace them back, then you should be able to move them into your mental diagram and see how they are connected.
