Mental illness is difficult to treat, and it’s extremely stigmatized. I’m not saying that its okay for men to be depressed, but I am saying that it is something that should be addressed as it affects men.
One of the most common questions I get from readers is “how can I find out if I want to get help?” Because mental illness is so stigmatized, this has become a huge source of stress for those who are struggling with it. Because being diagnosed with a mental illness and having to deal with the stigma associated with it is a big hurdle that needs to be overcome before you feel ready to seek help.
I get that. I also try to tell new clients that mental illness is something that should not be taken lightly. No one wants to get sick, but I have to remind them that it can be very serious. The sad truth is that we spend a lot of time avoiding the realities of mental illness. The first step in getting help is to name it.
